Training flat

Care leavers using the training flat, are young people , who are currently in Care.
They have 8 weeks in total, to gain the skills they need to live independently. This is delivered over Phases, with a 3 week breaks in between.
This allows the young person to practice and reflect what they have learnt and how they feel about the experience.

Trainees receive a structured programme, support and training while in the training flat. Each phase has a focus which concentrates on specific learning objectives.

The first Phase can be particularly intimidating and most trainees, also have contemplated the issues of loneliness and ways to address this too.

Phase 1 - Two weeks

Emphasis is on the pragmatisms of living on your own, for example, budgeting, paying rent and service charges, keeping the electric meter topped up, planning meals and shopping on a low budget, cooking, washing clothes planning and undertaking cleaning tasks.

Phase 2 - Four weeks

Focuses on relationships, i.e., with landlord, neighbours, family, friends and partners and where to access support. While having to continue to carry out the necessary practical tasks learned in Phase 1.

Phase 3–Two Weeks

This phase continues to build on learnt skills from the previous two phases.Phase 3,in addition gives the trainee the opportunity to consider housing options, in-depth information about bills, looks at benefits, work and study options.
Some of the exercises are conducted with the trainer, i.e., shopping until the trainee is confident and competent. Some exercises are researched based i.e., finding out where they can get support with different issues.
Each Phase can be purchased as a stand-alone package. For more information, please make contact.

Report

A written report/ analysis, is providedat the end of each phase identifying learning outcomes achieved and with identification of further learning/action required. This is shared in a meeting with the trainee, and the Social Worker. This allows everyone involved to be aware of what the trainee needs to think about, or practice before their next stay.
At the end of the three phases a report is compiled which demonstrate whether the young person is deemed ready to live independently. The Social Worker will use this report to help inform them of the most suitable housing option, for the young person. For example, the young person is ready to live on their own with no support, or they may need to live in supported housing to gain further experience of living on their own.

support hub

Our shared placement / home function as support hub, where young people have access to staff 24/7. Young people are encouraged to develop their independence skills through a weekly structured framework.

A matching assessment is undertaken, with each resident before placement, to ensure that residents are protected and their experience is positive. Each young person will be allocated a key worker who will support the young person on their transition journey.
